Herberto is a slug and for him life couldn’t be better. His everyday occupation: munching mountains of lettuce with his friends until his belly is full and it’s time to sleep again. Still, one day, one more in search of the tastiest lettuce he can find at the garden where he lives, Herberto comes across other animals that show their amazing skills and seem very busy creating. Herberto is amazed at what they do and praises these true artisans, while wishing that he also could create like them. But he can’t. At least that’s what he thinks. The good news will be given by a moth. This is Lara Hawthorne’s first book, a talented new artist that will surely leave a trace in our memory with this story about the need to create that we all carry within. Lara Hawthorne is currently living and working in Bristol, UK. She recently graduated with a First Class Honours from Falmouth University where she studied Illustration. Since graduating, she's been shortlisted for the Lowry Children's Book Award and has been working on a number of commissions and exhibitions. She is also part of the 'Beginning Middle End' collective, which is a small group of like-minded illustrators based in Bristol. Lara is most interested in narrative illustration, but also has experience in design and editorial, as well as scientific illustrations. Her main influences are folklore; natural history; Henri Rousseau and Tove Jansson, and she has a love of generally 'unpopular' creatures, such as rats and slugs. Lara dreams of keeping a family of rats, and hopes to do more travelling in West Africa. Herberto is Lara’s first published children's book and she wishes to carry on writing and illustrating her own stories."
